WordPress 5.7, named “Esperanza” after musician Esperanza Spalding, is now available with new features that simplify site management, including converting a site from HTTP to HTTPS with a single click.
Here’s an overview of the new features in WordPress 5.7:
What’s New in WordPress 5.7?
HTTP to HTTPS Conversion
The latest release makes it easier to migrate a site from HTTP to HTTPS. Previously, this process was complex, but now it can be completed with just one click. URLs in the site’s database are automatically updated when both the site and WordPress addresses are set to HTTPS. Additionally, the Site Health section now includes an HTTPS status check.
Easier to Use Editor
WordPress 5.7 introduces several enhancements to the editor:
- Adjust font size in more places: Font size controls are now available in the List and Code blocks.
- Reusable blocks: Improved stability and usability, with automatic saving when clicking “Update.”
- Drag-and-drop: Blocks and block patterns can now be dragged directly from the inserter into the post.
Do More Without Code
Site owners can make various changes to content without needing custom code:
- Full-height alignment: Easily make a block fill the entire browser window.
- Buttons block: Choose between vertical or horizontal layouts and set button widths to preset percentages.
- Social Icons block: Adjust the size of social icons with ease.
New Default Colors
WordPress 5.7 features a new default color palette that is more streamlined. The updated palette consists of seven core colors and 56 shades that meet the WCAG 2.0 AA recommended contrast ratio against white or black. This new palette is visible using the default WordPress dashboard color scheme.
New Robots API
The new Robots API allows site owners to include filter directives in the robots meta tags. By default, it includes the max-image-preview: large
directive, enabling search engines like Google to show larger image previews, potentially driving more traffic.
Lazy Loading iFrames
WordPress 5.7 simplifies setting iframes to lazy-load by default. It now adds a loading="lazy"
attribute to iframe tags when both width and height are specified.
WordPress 5.7 is now available for all site owners.
