Google Search Central has released new documentation on Google Trends, outlining its use for search marketing. This guide serves as an easy introduction for newcomers and a valuable refresher for experienced search marketers and publishers.
The new guide consists of six sections:
- About Google Trends
- Tutorial on monitoring trends
- How to conduct keyword research with the tool
- How to prioritize content using Trends data
- How to use Google Trends for competitor analysis
- How to use Google Trends to analyze brand awareness and sentiment
The section on monitoring trends suggests there are two types of rising trends, general and specific, which can aid in developing content for a site.
By using the Explore tool, users can leave the search box empty to view current rising trends worldwide or use a dropdown menu to focus on trends in a specific country. Trends can further be filtered by time periods, categories, and the type of search, displaying results by topic and keywords.
To find specific trends, users simply enter specific queries and then filter them by country, time, categories, and type of search.
The section called Content Calendar explains how to use Google Trends to determine which content topics to prioritize.
Google explains:
“Google Trends can be helpful not only to generate ideas on what to write but also to determine when to publish it. To better prioritize which topics to focus on, try identifying seasonal trends within the data. With that information, you can plan ahead to have high-quality content available on your site shortly before people start searching for it, ensuring your content is ready for them when they do.”
