Mastering Local Search Optimization: An Interview with Mary Bowling

As part of our interview series, Mary Bowling of Optimized! joins us to discuss how to get found locally with local search optimization tactics.

Local search is all about being found by people in your area who are looking for what you offer. For some businesses, their entire livelihood depends on local search. For brick-and-mortar businesses especially, the only customers they’re going to get are those who either live in the same area or are passing through.

How can you make sure you’re getting found in the search engines by people in your area? Mary explains how in the video below:

Here are some key takeaways from the video:

  • The first thing Mary recommends doing is setting up your Google+ Pages For Business local listing. Set it up correctly with as much detail as possible to optimize for Google Maps ranking.
  • In addition to Google+, you also have to optimize your website for local search in order to get found organically, which starts with having your address on the home page of your website.
  • Ideally, your name, address, and phone number should be on every page of your website (in the footer) for best results. Think of it like handing a business card to the search engines.
  • Another tip Mary suggests is using location terms in your page titles. Visitors don’t always land on your home page first; they could potentially land on any page of your site, so you want to tell them where you are and what you do on every page.
