Google’s Local Search Algorithm Now Available in UK, Canada, and Australia

Earlier this summer, Google introduced an algorithm specifically designed to enhance local search results. Initially, it was implemented only in the US, but there is now evidence to suggest it has extended to other parts of the world.

An SEO professional in the UK first mentioned on social media that he saw significant changes with his local SEO clients, sparking a discussion among other professionals who reported noticing similar trends.

Reports have also indicated “significant volatility” in Maps results in the UK, Canada, and Australia. The local search company provided a comparison between two sets of old and new local search results in the UK, further demonstrating substantial changes.

One of the key differences is the tightening of the maps radius for local searches. Changes can also be observed in the ordering of search results, with some SEOs noting that their clients have moved higher in the rankings while others have dropped several positions.

Another notable change with Google’s local search algorithm is the reduction in local packs, decreasing from 7 listings to 3. Searchers in the UK have reported seeing this reduction, but it appears that this change has not yet been observed in Canada. This implies the rollout is further along in the UK than in Canada.

Moving forward, local rankings in the UK, Canada, and Australia will likely be more influenced by factors such as domain authority, inbound links, and other elements that typically impact local search results.
