The Performance Game is an asteroid-blasting game based on actual Google Lighthouse scores. Martin Schierle, a Mobile Solutions Consultant at Google, created a game using your Lighthouse performance scores to generate this unique game.
In the game, various asteroids represent aspects like wasted resources, as identified by your Lighthouse audit. At the end of the game, you can review your actual Lighthouse scores. Presumably, improving your Lighthouse scores will enhance your game performance.
The Performance Game Announced on Twitter
Martin Schierle announced the game on Twitter. The game had been in development since at least August 2018 when the start of its development was previously tweeted.
What’s the Performance Game About?
The game helps visualize performance bottlenecks. The better your Lighthouse score, the more powerful your blaster becomes. For example, if your site is secure, you’ll be awarded a shield power-up.
There are many details to the game:
- Every level represents a reached performance metric.
- Every asteroid represents a loaded resource.
- The color of an asteroid indicates how much of the resource was used.
- An orange asteroid means less than 85% of the resource is used.
- A green asteroid means more than 85% of the resource is used.
To play the game, enter your URL, allow Lighthouse to audit your site, and then the game loads based on your Lighthouse scores.
How to Play The Performance Game
Playing the game involves using your arrow keys. The up arrow key powers a small spaceship, while the left and right arrow keys steer it. The spacebar activates your blaster to destroy the oncoming asteroids.

This is the first screen of the Performance Game. You enter your URL and wait while Google Lighthouse performs a performance audit on your site. Once the audit is done, the game can begin.
Level One is based on your First Contentful Paint
Once the game begins, start blasting and maneuvering to avoid collisions. A collision with an asteroid results in your spaceship exploding.
