Google has recently disclosed the timeframe for removing a URL from search results after a removal request is submitted. Site owners can request specific URL removals through a tool in Google Search Console, and Google has confirmed that this process is typically completed in less than a day.
It’s important to clarify that the URL removal tool itself is not a new feature. Introduced in 2007, it initially took around 3 to 5 days to process requests. Since then, Google has significantly improved the processing time for URL removal requests. Nowadays, if a site owner submits a URL removal request, they can expect it to be removed by the following day or even sooner.
However, this measure is temporary. While it’s the quickest way to remove a URL from search results, it is not permanent. URLs removed through Search Console requests will reappear in 90 days unless further action is taken. Such actions could include adding a noindex tag, setting the page to return a 404 status, or placing the URLs behind a login.
The advantage of utilizing the Search Console URL removal tool is the quick response time. Otherwise, if site owners were to rely just on a noindex tag without additional actions, they would have to wait until Google recrawled the page for it to be removed from search results, which could take longer than a day.
