Want to know the current gas prices near you? Just turn to Google search. According to Mike Blumenthal, and reported by many others, gas prices are beginning to show up in the local three-pack, the local finder, and the knowledge panel that appears for local searches.
It’s uncertain where Google is sourcing its data regarding gas prices at this time. Third-party aggregators like GasBuddy have been ruled out.
If this feature is available in your area, you will only see it on Safari and Chrome for iPhone, but, interestingly, not on the Google search app. On desktop, it is available for both Safari and Chrome.
This is yet another example of Google trying to provide local searchers with exactly what they’re looking for without requiring them to scroll further down the page.
Since this is just a test, remember that your mileage may vary when it comes to receiving accurate gas prices. In other words, don’t drive to the pump and get upset if the price doesn’t match what you initially saw on Google.
