Google has updated the character limit for posts on Google My Business to 1,500 characters. Previously, the post length was based on word count requirements, ranging from a minimum of 100 words to a maximum of 300 words. Now, posts do not have a minimum length requirement.
Scott Rollins initially spotted this change, which was also highlighted in a tweet by Ben Fisher.
In practical terms, the switch to a 1,500-character limit means users will generally find the maximum length for posts shortened, as 1,500 characters roughly equate to 250 words. This may vary depending on word size, but writing a 300-word post within 1,500 characters seems improbable. Users accustomed to the 300-word limit will need to adjust to writing more concise posts.
This change could be beneficial given that a 300-word post is relatively lengthy for the Google My Business platform. When users visit a GMB page, they typically seek quick, digestible information rather than long articles. For in-depth reading, a website is more appropriate.
One key advantage of GMB posts is their visibility in Maps and search results. Being concise helps capture people’s attention more effectively. The ideal length for a GMB post aligns more closely with the length of a tweet or Facebook post.
