A new, previously announced interface for Android Auto in automobiles is now rolling out. As Android Auto becomes more widespread, an increasing number of local search site visitors may be accessing from their vehicles.
Although Android Auto emphasizes apps significantly, this might still lead to greater adoption and an uptick in calls and visits to businesses related to local search.
New App Launcher
The Android Auto interface includes a new app launcher that places the most frequently used apps at the top.
Activating a media player, like Spotify, will resume playback from where you left off.
A new navigation bar located at the bottom of the screen allows you to control a media app like Spotify while utilizing a map app simultaneously.
The updated Android Auto features a dark mode and more readable fonts. While the focus remains primarily on apps, local search businesses might benefit as drivers increasingly use Google to locate nearby restaurants or other businesses.
This trend could make implementing JSON-LD structured data and maintaining a strong local search presence increasingly important.
Some features from Android Auto will eventually be integrated into Driving Mode within the regular Google Assistant for mobile devices, although this will not happen immediately.
According to the official Google announcement:
“These updates will not be reflected in Android Auto for your phone screen. We will be evolving the phone screen experience from Android Auto to the Assistant’s new driving mode in the future.”
