Google is experimenting with a fresh design for desktop search results, incorporating a sticky header and a rounded search bar. A Reddit user spotted this test and shared a thread with a couple of screenshots.
Although I haven’t personally seen this new design in action, the number of upvotes and replies on the Reddit thread suggests that it hasn’t been widely observed by users. However, another Reddit user mentioned that they’ve accessed the new design while using Chrome on a Chromebook.
Based on the screenshots, here are the most noticeable updates:
- Sticky header: A simplified version of the header remains at the top of the screen as users scroll, making it easier to initiate another search without needing to scroll back up.
- Rounded search bar: The search bar’s corners have been rounded, aligning with Google’s recent trend of incorporating rounded corners. Additionally, the "see results about" box is rounder, though the "top stories" box remains unchanged.
- Smaller logo: Google’s logo has been reduced in size, possibly to better integrate with the new search bar design.
This ongoing testing by Google doesn’t confirm a permanent change in the desktop search result design. Nonetheless, it’s intriguing to see a potential redesign being trialed. Amidst a mobile-first focus in search, it’s refreshing to witness Google’s attention on desktop search features.
