Google Completes June 2019 Core Update Rollout on June 8

Danny Sullivan from Google confirmed that the June 2019 core update, which began rolling out on June 3rd, finished on June 8th.

Five-day rollout. The update took about five days to fully deploy, starting on Monday, June 3rd, and ending on Saturday, June 8th. This duration is not unusual, given Google’s extensive network of servers and data centers worldwide, which all need to receive the update. While five days for such a rollout doesn’t seem long, previous updates have taken weeks or even longer.

The announcement. Danny Sullivan of Google confirmed this update on June 8 in response to inquiries.

How big was it? Early data showed the impact of the update while it was still rolling out. Notable publications like the Daily Mail and CCN mentioned the significant effects on their sites. More data is being compiled and will be shared soon, but it’s important to note that most data snapshots only provide a glimpse into a small part of the Google index and do not fully represent the update’s overall impact. Unlike previous updates like Panda and Penguin, Google has not provided specifics on the extent of this update’s impact but has described it as “noticeable.”

Update overlapped with another update. This June 2019 core update overlapped with the diversity update. The core update occurred from June 3 to June 8, while the diversity update took place from June 4 to June 6.

Why we should care. Understanding the timeline of when Google releases significant updates helps in tracking changes in website traffic through analytics. Knowing specific timestamps can identify whether a site was affected by an algorithmic update, a technical issue, or some other factor. Analyzing overlapping updates can be challenging, but skilled SEOs should be able to determine the impact of each update on a specific site over time.
