Google has informed recipe site owners that they may begin to see an increase in traffic from various sources. This is due to an update that makes recipes accessible through Google Assistant on Google Home.
Recipes have become more easily discoverable because of new structured data properties that offer users additional details about a recipe. Google suggests that this could lead to "higher-quality traffic to your site."
To enable more users to find recipes, site owners need to provide extra information by incorporating the following properties into their structured data:
- Videos: Include an array to demonstrate how to prepare the dish with a video.
- Category: Inform users about the type of meal or course the dish belongs to.
- Cuisine: Indicate the region associated with your recipe.
- Keywords: Add terms related to your recipe, such as season, holiday, special event, or other descriptors.
Site owners can further detail their recipes by outlining each step of the recipe and breaking down individual sections within each step.
The minimum requirements for a recipe to be discoverable by Google Assistant on Google Home are the ‘recipeIngredient’ and ‘recipeInstructions’ properties.
Without these two properties, a recipe will not qualify for guided instructions with Google Assistant but can still appear in search results.
