Google Allo Chat App and Virtual Assistant Coming to Desktop

Google’s messaging app Allo, along with its built-in virtual assistant, is coming to desktop. Until now, there were no indications of Allo being anything more than a mobile app — but now it is confirmed that it will soon be appearing on larger screens, in a manner of speaking.

Nick Fox, Google’s VP of Communications Products, announced on Twitter that an Allo desktop client is currently in “early development”. Fox also shared a screenshot:

There are only a couple of things we can glean from the early build of Google Allo on desktop at this point. It appears to be a Chrome app rather than one specifically built for either Windows or Mac. It supports Google Assistant both in chats with friends and in direct interactions with the bot itself.

Beyond that, there isn’t much information available about the desktop client, including its launch timeline. What has been known for some time is that the Allo mobile app has struggled to gain widespread popularity.

Apparently, Google has realized that successful chat apps need to be accessible on multiple devices. This is true for Facebook Messenger, Apple’s iMessage, Skype, Slack, and virtually every other messaging app that people use daily.

However, at this point, it’s unclear whether Allo will be available on multiple devices. It might still be limited to one device at a time — we’ll have to wait until it gets closer to launch to learn more.
