Google Acquires Mobile App Development Platform Fabric

Fabric, one of the leading mobile development platforms, has been acquired by Google. The company made the announcement today on its blog, but did not reveal further details about the acquisition, aside from stating that the Fabric team will now be collaborating directly with Google’s Firebase team.

Additionally, the tools developed by Fabric will be integrated into Google’s offerings. This includes the Crashlytics reporting system, Answers—a tool that aids app developers in interpreting data more easily—and Digits, a phone number authentication system. Crashlytics and Digits were recently acknowledged as the top SDKs for app stability and analytics.

Since its launch in 2014, Fabric reports that its tools have been utilized by over 580,000 mobile developers and have been installed on over 2.5 billion mobile devices. These platforms will be merged with Google’s Firebase to create “the best mobile developer platform in the world for app teams.”

According to Google’s announcement, Crashlytics is set to become the primary crash reporting tool for Firebase. More details about the collaboration between the two teams will be disclosed once the deal is finalized in the coming weeks.

Current users of Fabric or any of its products can continue using them without any immediate changes. However, the use of these tools is now subject to new terms of service.
