DuckDuckGo is introducing several enhancements to its map search functionality, while continuing to uphold its commitment to user privacy.
Earlier this year, DuckDuckGo began utilizing Apple Maps to provide map search results.
Since that integration, DuckDuckGo has been working on additional updates that are now being released.
Here’s a look at the new features in DuckDuckGo’s map search:
- Map Re-Querying: Users can now refine local searches instantly without leaving the expanded map view. Previously, a new maps search required users to return to the main search page.
- Local Autocomplete: The search bar will now dynamically offer localized search suggestions as users type new queries.
- Dedicated Maps Tab: A ‘Maps’ tab will now be permanently available in the top navigation menu, instead of appearing only for searches deemed to be maps-related.
- Dark Mode: Apple’s maps will now switch to dark mode when users select DuckDuckGo’s dark theme.
DuckDuckGo emphasizes that its commitment to privacy remains unchanged:
"A lot has changed with using maps on DuckDuckGo making it an even smoother experience, but what hasn’t changed is the way we handle your data—or rather, the way we don’t do anything with your data. We are making local searches faster while retaining the privacy you expect."
DuckDuckGo ensures maps searches remain private by not sharing any personally identifiable data with Apple. Additionally, DuckDuckGo uses approximate location information that is discarded immediately after use.
