Google Maps is introducing a global update to its ride services mode, featuring a new design and the capability to book rides directly within the app.
The updated ride services design in Google Maps is a more advanced version of the previous one. Rather than just displaying a list of available ride options in your area, the new interface includes a map that shows nearby cars, similar to what you would see in the ride service’s own app. Additionally, Google Maps will highlight any applicable promotions.
Here’s a comparison of the old design (left) versus the new design (right):
In the image above, you can see a “REQUEST” button under the Uber listings. Users can now book and pay for an Uber ride directly within Google Maps. Remarkably, you don’t even need the Uber app installed on your phone, as Google Maps handles everything.
Moreover, using Uber through Google Maps offers an extra benefit that is not available through Uber’s app. While en route to your destination, Google Maps will provide relevant information such as menus, operating hours, and other essential details.
Currently, Google Maps collaborates with several ride service partners worldwide, but Uber is the only one that currently allows booking and payments directly within the app.
