James Murray of Bing recently mentioned in an interview that links might decrease in importance in search engine rankings.
As links become less significant, Bing predicts that search will evolve to focus more on personalization and context.
In the interview conducted at Bing HQ in Paddington, London, Murray states:
"We’re still not at the stage where links are going to go away, so they will continue to be a factor that we look at.
There’s good reason why links have served their purpose up until now and I think they will continue to do so."
Although links have been essential up until now, Murray elaborates on the future direction of search rankings.
He suggests that the data collected by search engines about users is highly valuable. This data enhances the ability of search engines to personalize results and better meet user queries.
It appears that Bing supports the idea of using personal information to decide which results to deliver to different users at specific times.
While we prepare for a potentially post-link future, it’s crucial to remember the current value of links. Don’t start devaluing the importance of link-building just yet.
