Google is transforming Maps into a type of social network by providing each user with a profile featuring the photos and reviews they’ve contributed.
This development is an expansion of a pilot feature introduced last year, which allowed users to follow select Local Guides and receive their latest updates.
Following the pilot’s success, Google is now making this feature available worldwide to all users.
“Today we’re expanding this feature and beginning to roll it out globally. If a Google Maps user has shared photos, reviews, or lists publicly, you can now follow them and get their recommendations, advice, and updates delivered to your Updates tab in Google Maps. So the next time you find someone sharing helpful photos of takeout menus, useful lists of your city’s most spacious parks, or inspiring photos of local shops and services, you can stay up-to-date on all of their recommendations.”
Google Maps profiles will include topic filters, allowing users to see the places and businesses shared most frequently.
Users can also add a short tagline below their profile photo, reminiscent of Instagram’s style.
Here’s an example of a Google Maps profile:
Managing Your Google Maps Profile
Any Google user who has publicly shared photos, reviews, or lists can manage their own Google Maps profile.
Firstly, no one is required to have a public profile. Everyone has the option to hide or display the content they’ve shared on Google Maps.
Users can also opt to restrict their profile, meaning new followers must be approved before they can view content. Alternatively, users can choose to keep their profile open for everyone to follow. These settings can be adjusted on the profile page.
