Google has introduced several new features and attributes in Google My Business (GMB) since the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic.
If you run a local business, it’s essential to stay updated on these changes to maximize the potential of the platform.
Here, we’ll go over 10 recent updates to Google My Business that you should be aware of.
### 1. Health & Safety Attributes
In late 2020, GMB added new attributes to help customers make informed decisions about the health standards at businesses they might visit. These attributes include:
– Appointment required.
– Mask required.
– Staff wear masks.
– Staff get temperature checks.
– Temperature check required.
If your business follows stricter health-related guidelines compared to your competitors and you advertise them on GMB, you could attract more health-conscious customers.
### 2. Pandemic-Related Attributes for Restaurants
Google was quick to roll out COVID-related attributes for the foodservice industry. These attributes became available shortly after businesses began reopening:
– Curbside pickup.
– No-contact delivery.
– Dine-in.
### 3. Attributes for Online Services
During the peak of the pandemic, many businesses transitioned to virtual services, making online meetings and Zoom commonplace. In response, Google added several new attributes to cater to online-only services:
– Online Care.
– Online Appointment.
– Online Estimates.
– Online Classes.
Consider leveraging these attributes to appeal to customers who prefer avoiding physical exposure to COVID-19.
### 4. Call Logging
Currently in test mode, GMB is developing a call logging feature that lets you track customer calls originating from Google Search and Maps. This feature allows you to:
– Keep track of phone calls from your customers.
– Respond to missed calls.
– See logged calls in the Calls tab (available only on the app).
The call logging feature will mask your real phone number with a forwarding number.
### 5. Additional GMB Insights Data
Google has enhanced GMB performance reports, providing:
– Information on how many people reached out to you after visiting your profile.
– Detailed reports on search appearances, including Google Maps searches.
These insights will be available for up to six months.
### 6. Messaging
GMB messaging has now been rolled out on its desktop UI, previously available via the mobile app. You can engage with customers directly from the platform:
– A “Messages” button appears on the left-hand sidebar.
– Opt-in to the service and ensure responses within 24 hours to maintain messaging rights.
### 7. Black-Owned Business
Google updated shopping search results to facilitate finding Black-owned businesses. This attribute was launched due to increased interest in supporting Black-owned businesses. Upon setting this attribute, expect a short delay before it becomes effective. Currently, it is available to U.S.-based Google Merchant Center retailers.
### 8. Max Video Upload Size
GMB has reduced its maximum video upload size from 100MB to 75MB, requiring businesses to adjust their content accordingly.
### GMB is Table Stakes for Local Search
Google My Business is potentially more significant than your website for local online promotion. Optimize your profile for search and keep up with the latest GMB updates to better promote your brand.
